Evidently the third party driver for the internal NVMe SSD won't be included in ESXi so I have to compile an ESXi image with that included in it. It wouldn't detect my USB C NVMe SSD enclosure and while it did boot fine from the USB 3 flash drive. I have ESXi 7.0.3 on a 2018 Mac mini booting from a USB 3 flash drive at the moment. The mac and ESXi both see the drive as native NVME, ESXi was able to install to the drive and set up a VMFS datastore out of the gate. Using an NVME/TB3 enclosure worked with the installation without any modifications necessary. I'm hoping ESX will see the pcie/nvme drive as "internal" and hopefully allow for an esxi 8.0 install in the future.ĮDIT: reporting back with success. William Lam had posted about ESXi 7 having native support for the thunderbolt controller (just not the internal SSD) so I've purchased an Orico TB3 NVME enclosure and a 1TB EVO 970 on which I'm going to try a native installation of esxi when they arrive later today. While I had the machine connected back at my desk I noticed some other warnings on the console about USB boot not being supported in future versions of esx. Something appears to have gone bad on the flash drive since the installer drive is able to boot up and use the NIC fine.
When I moved the Mini to my rack downstairs it didn't boot up onto the network, attaching a monitor it shows that it wasn't able to find the nic in the mini. I excluded the T7 from the USB arbitrator service and rebooted to make sure everything was good. I reconfigured my vmknic to use jumbo frames, as well as my vswitch. I installed ESXi on a flash drive and used that to boot up, once again I had to manually repartition the T7, but this time I marked it as an SSD since it was seen as a normal drive and I hadn't noticed that the first time around. While copying my VMs back from my NFS storage to the SSD, ESXi threw an error about files on the target. I was able to get the mini 8,1 to boot but had to manually add a partition and format it in order for a VMFS volume to show up.
I attempted to install esxi 7.0.3 directly on the 500GB T7 I bought. I'm on the same journey right now and have figured out a few things.
